US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that Washington would consider the feasibility of further providing Azerbaijan with various types of assistance against the background of tensions in Karabakh.
Committee chairman Robert Menendez said he was disappointed with the decision of the US President Joe Biden’s administration to continue providing assistance to the Azerbaijani government, including the military.
“We will have to continue to consider this. I have been actively working on this. Especially over the return of prisoners, interaction on negotiations with the aim of a genuine settlement”, – Blinken replied.
Recall that the conflict on the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh resumed in the fall of 2020. With the assistance of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a trilateral agreement on a complete cessation of hostilities.
However, since May 12 of this year, the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in the region of Gegharkunik and Syunik regions of Armenia has become aggravated. The parties accuse each other of provocations. At the end of May, Azerbaijan captured six Armenian servicemen while trying to cross the border.
