The United States will soon announce new sanctions against Belarus, the “price” for the actions of the country’s leadership will increase, said the appointed ambassador to the republic Julie Fisher.
“As announced by the White House, additional sanctions will follow, and they will follow soon”, – Fischer said at a hearing before the Senate International Committee.
She added that the US is coordinating with partners in the EU, Canada and Britain on the issue of new sanctions. Fischer said that a new executive order in relation to Belarus is being actively developed to replace the one that was adopted in 2006.
“We will raise the price for the violence and repression of the regime”, – Fischer said.
Earlier, the press secretary of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, Anatoly Glaz, told RIA Novosti that the accreditation process for the US Ambassador to Minsk Fischer had not been completed, and her activities in relation to the republic could not be considered official. Glaz emphasized that “until the end of accreditation, Fischer has only the sonorous status of the appointed US ambassador to Belarus, and then only for the internal purposes of the American side”, and “there are no international legal grounds for a different interpretation, as well as for considering official her statements or other activities” in relation to Belarus.
After the presidential elections in Belarus on August 9, 2020, in which Alexander Lukashenko won for the sixth time, who, according to the CEC, gained 80.1% of the vote, massive opposition protests began in the country, to suppress which the security forces, among other things, used special means and special equipment. On February 11, the KGB of Belarus announced that the situation in the country had stabilized, the peak of the protests had passed, their manifestations had practically disappeared. The European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada have imposed sanctions against a number of Belarusian officials and enterprises, accusing Minsk of electoral violations and human rights violations.
