Expert explains why Zelensky is unable to resolve conflict in Donbass

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not have the political will to resolve the situation in Donbas, IMEMO RAN president and member of the board of trustees and scientific council of the Russian International Affairs Council Alexander Dynkin said in an interview with TASS

“The Minsk agreements stipulate that the chain of events should be as follows: inclusion of a provision on regional autonomy in the Ukrainian constitution, elections, transfer of control over the border with Russia to the Ukrainians. They are beginning to twist the situation, saying that first we need control over the border, then elections. Our answer is that then nationalists will enter the region and with the support of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry will arrange something similar to the Srebrenica massacre of 1995, we will not go for it”, – the expert noted.

He explained that from a scientific and expert point of view, the situation in Donbas is “a frozen conflict of sluggish intensity. In addition, this conflict is the largest in Europe of the 21st century

“Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in general, has no political experience and political will”, –  Dynkin stressed.

The expert added that Zelensky entered politics on a wave of expectations of peace and enjoyed overwhelming support in both the presidential election and the Verkhovna Rada vote. However, he is now completely unable to stand up to Ukrainian nationalist movements.

“Kiev is blocking movement along the track of the Minsk agreements, which gives Brussels reasons to extend the anti-Russian sanctions every year. […] I do not see a quick resolution to the conflict in south-east Ukraine. But if this conflict is resolved, relations with Europe will improve dramatically”, –  Dynkin summarised.
