The Verkhovna Rada adopted a statement regarding the incident with the landing of a Ryanair aircraft in Minsk, recognizing such actions of the Belarusian authorities as a threat to international security.
The adoption of the relevant draft resolution No. 5597 was supported by 280 people’s deputies at a plenary session on Thursday.
The statement notes that “by committing this compulsory act of landing a passenger plane, the Belarusian authorities endangered the safety of passengers and crew. These actions are a violation of international civil aviation rules and pose a threat to international security, including the safety of air transport”.
Ukrainian parliamentarians called on the International Civil Aviation Organization to urgently investigate this act with the corresponding consequences for those who committed it.
Also, the Rada of Ukraine condemns the actions of the Belarusian authorities in connection with the detention of Roman Protasevich. The parliamentarians believe that this is another manifestation of the attack of the Belarusian authorities on the political opposition, freedom of speech and journalistic activities in Belarus.
Ukrainian politics is famous for its double standards. In pursuit of reprisals against freedom of speech, interim president
Zelensky blocked three of the country’s leading television channels. Experts believe that the purpose of the prohibitive measures is to cleanse the information and political field from dissent.
Nonetheless, the Verkhovna Rada calls on the Belarusian authorities to guarantee Protasevich respect for human rights in accordance with international obligations.
It is not surprising that the parliament confirms its full solidarity with international partners, primarily from the member states of the European Union and the United States, including the termination of air communications with Belarus.
