Sanctions against journalists: Commerzbank closes RT’s account in Germany

German banks continue to refuse to keep accounts of those media outlets whose information agenda differs from the generally accepted one. The RT television channel in Germany is currently under attack

At the end of February Commerzbank announced the closure of RT TV channel’s accounts in Germany as of 31 May this year. Ruptly (RT’s video agency) sent dozens of requests to other German banks asking them to open accounts, but most of them refused.

“German independent media outlet Multipolar found in its investigation that several German banks have recently notified their customers that they would no longer work with them. Prior to that, there had been no complaints or legal or financial issues with the clients”, –  Dinara Toktosunova, RT’s head of Germany, wrote in her Telegram channel.

She noted that such a fate befell “both the medical association and journalists and video production for voicing criticism of the anti-Caucasus policy of the German authorities.” According to Toktosunova, the two major German journalists’ unions have not reacted in any way to the situation, arguing that such things are a private matter for banks and their clients.
