NYT: US firearms sales surge

During the coronavirus pandemic, gun purchases in the United States have skyrocketed. More than half of the buyers are women, says The New York Times

“Sales of firearms in the US jumped 64% in 2020 compared to the previous year. About one in five of the 17 million Americans who bought a gun last year did so for the first time. This year, the gun boom in the country continues. Americans have purchased more than 2.3 million guns in January alone, the highest level since last July”, – the newspaper says.

The paper notes that firearms sales in the U.S. always increase during election years and after high-profile crimes. According to a study by Northeastern University experts, 39% of American families own firearms.
According to experts, shootings in public places in the US have become an epidemic. Law enforcers are reporting almost daily deaths as a result of shootings. Earlier it was reported that nine people were injured in a shooting in Rhode Island.
