A high-ranking negotiating team from Germany has travelled to Washington to discuss Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Bloomberg reports
According to the agency, the delegation includes Jan Hecker, an adviser to German Chancellor, and Lars-Hendrik Reller, Merkel’s economic adviser. They plan to meet with US presidential aide Jacob Sullivan and US Trade Representative Catherine Thye.
The parties intend to discuss Nord Stream 2, the difficulties in economic relations, in particular the issue of steel and aluminium import duties imposed under former US President Donald Trump.
“Nord Stream 2” envisages the construction of a two-pronged pipeline with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic metres of gas per year from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany. The U.S. is actively opposing the construction of Nord Stream 2 because it wants to supply its own liquefied gas to European countries.
