A case of human infection with the H10N3 strain of bird flu has been detected in Jiangsu province, the State Health Committee of China has reported
According to the committee, the 41-year-old man from Zhenjiang city developed a high fever in late April, went to the doctor several days later due to his worsening condition and was hospitalized. The Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has carried out a full genomic study on samples taken from the patient. The result was positive for avian influenza virus H10N3.
Experts note that a full genome analysis of the virus showed an avian origin of the strain. It does not have the ability to “effectively” infect humans, hence the risk of large-scale spread is extremely low. No previous cases of H10N3 infection have been recorded. Chinese experts recommend avoiding contact with live birds, paying attention to food hygiene and taking protective measures.
