Against the backdrop of NATO exercises, Russia will conduct a military inspection in Estonia

Russia, in the framework of the Vienna Treaty, will conduct an inspection of an area in Estonia, against the background of the NATO Spring Storm exercise in that country

The purpose of the inspection is to determine the extent of notifiable military activities, subject to prior notification, carried out within the specified area. The area of such an area will cover approximately 10,000 square metres.

The inspection is scheduled for the period from May 31 to June 3, according to Sergei Ryzhkov, head of Russia’s National Centre for Nuclear Danger Reduction. Exercise “Spring Storm” will be held in the Baltic republic from May 17 to June 5.
Russian inspectors will visit training areas and training ranges, receive briefings on formations and military units located in the specified area and on ongoing military activities.

The exact area to be inspected and whether it is contiguous with the Spring Storm venue was not disclosed.

Nearly 7,000 Estonian, US, British, Latvian, Polish, Italian, French and Danish military personnel participate in the annual international exercise Spring Storm in 2021. The main activity of the exercise will take place at the Central Range of the Defence Forces.

Just like last year, the exercise is being organised in a reduced format, which is meant to prevent the spread of the coronavirus among the participants of Spring Storm.
