Merkel on wiretaps: Paris reacts to Danish intelligence breach

The French government said today, May 31, that media reports alleging that the United States spied on Europe’s leading politicians with the help of Danish intelligence were “extremely serious” if proven, France-Presse reported

“It is very serious. We need to see whether our partners in the European Union, the Danes, have made mistakes or shortcomings in their cooperation with the US intelligence services”, –  French Minister for European Affairs Clément Bon told France Info.

As EADaily reported, sensational information came out of Denmark the day before: US intelligence, in cooperation with Copenhagen, gave the US National Security Agency access to Danish internet connections. As a result, the US was able to wiretap leading European politicians, most notably German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Sweden has described Denmark’s behaviour as “unacceptable”.
