US test of sea-based missile defence system fails

The test target could not be hit – the missiles fired at it missed

A US warship has failed to intercept a medium-range ballistic missile test target during a training exercise.

The purpose of the test was reportedly to demonstrate the Aegis ballistic missile defence ship’s ability to detect, track, engage and intercept a medium-range ballistic missile target with a salvo of two Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) Dual II missiles.

The Pentagon noted that the interception was not achieved and the target remained unharmed and continued on its trajectory. Exactly where the exercise took place was not reported.
