In the US, they talked about the Russian “city destroyers”

Military expert Peter Sichiu, in an article for the National Interest, spoke about the Russian submarines of Project 955 Borei

The modernized nuclear submarine “Knyaz Oleg” will begin sea trials next month. It was laid down in 2014, but due to problems with supplies, the construction was delayed. In July 2020, the submarine was launched. It was assumed that it will enter service for the Day of the Navy, however, according to the journalist, this is unlikely to happen on time.

Suchiu recalled that “Prince Oleg” is not the first submarine of the upgraded project 955A “Borei-A”. Another nuclear-powered submarine, Knyaz Vladimir, from the same class, entered the Navy last June. This strategic submarine is the fourth generation of nuclear-powered submarines built for the Russian Navy. Their main goal is the destruction of enemy cities, even if other nuclear forces are destroyed, the expert noted.

Today, Russia operates a total of four Project 955 Borei / 955A Borei-A submarines, and three more of this type are in various stages of construction. Each of them has 16 Bulava ICBMs in its arsenal.

Earlier, a member of the board of the Military-Industrial Commission and the Marine Board under the government, Vladimir Pospelov, told RIA Novosti that the strategic nuclear missile carriers of the Borei and Borei-A projects are now replacing the Project 667 submarines, which have experienced a record number of upgrades.
