Acting Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan stated that Azerbaijan directly threatens the territorial integrity of Armenia and violates international law.
Earlier, the Armenian Defense Ministry stated that on the morning of May 27, “the Azerbaijani Armed Forces surrounded and captured six servicemen of the Armenian Armed Forces, who were carrying out engineering work in the protected territory of the Armenian Armed Forces military unit at the border section of the Gegharkunik region”. The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry, in turn, announced the detention of six Armenian soldiers while trying to cross the border.
“The incidents occurring (at the border – ed.) indicate that this is not an ordinary phenomenon, as the Azerbaijani authorities are trying to present. This is a direct danger that directly threatens the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Armenia”, – Pashinyan said at a government meeting.
The Armenian Defense Ministry reported on May 12 that the Azerbaijani armed forces tried to carry out certain work “to clarify the borders” in one of the border areas of the Syunik region. At the same time, the department did not specify what specific work was carried out by the Azerbaijani military. The incident at the border was discussed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and acting Foreign Minister of Armenia Ara Ayvazyan. During a telephone conversation, Pashinyan informed Russian President Vladimir Putin about his instructions to seek consultations from the CSTO in connection with the situation in the Syunik region.
