EU to freeze 3bn investment aid to Belarus

The European Commission said that the aid will not be unfrozen “until Belarus becomes a democracy”

This was stated by the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, reports Reuters on Monday.

“We will put pressure on the regime until it finally respects media freedom, freedom of the press and freedom of opinion”, –  von der Leyen said before a meeting of the EU leaders in Brussels on the issue of further sanctions against Belarus.

New measures could be targeted against persons involved in the landing of Ryanair aircraft, businesses and economic entities, financing the country’s leadership, as well as the aviation sector in Belarus, added the head of the EC.

Recall that the ICAO will convene for an emergency meeting due to the interception of the plane. The incident in Minsk will be discussed by 36 diplomatic representatives of the ICAO Council next Thursday.
