The leaders of the 27 European Union member states have instructed EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell to prepare a report on relations between the EU and Russia for a planned summit in June, according to a statement at a two-day EU summit in Brussels. This is said in a statement from the two-day EU summit taking place in Brussels
“The European Council has reaffirmed its commitment to the five principles guiding EU policy towards Russia. It tasks the European Commission and the EU diplomatic chief with presenting a report on relations with Russia at the June summit with policy options and in line with these five principles”, – said a statement issued following a “strategic discussion on Russia” by EU heads of state and government.
The five-paragraph document also stressed that the European Council “condemns Russia’s illegal, provocative and destructive actions against the European Union, its member states and beyond” the community.
“It reaffirms EU unity and solidarity in the face of such actions, as well as the support of Eastern partners,” the statement said.
