NYT: Russia “bypassed the USA” in the development of the Arctic

A timely response from Russia to climate change in the Arctic has made it possible to significantly strengthen its defensive positions there, writes The New York Times.

The newspaper notes that Moscow, “unlike the US State Department”, managed to openly admit climate change and adopted in the fall of 2020 the Strategy for the Development of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation and Ensuring National Security for the Period until 2035.

“Although the RF Armed Forces have little in common with liberal Western politicians or environmental organizations like Greenpeace, they share the view that the ice is really melting. This allowed them to bypass the United States”, – emphasized in the New York Times.

According to CNA research center analyst Michael Koufman, the melting ice “opens up a new theater of war in the event of a conflict with the United States”.
