American leader Joe Biden may meet with his North Korean counterpart Kim Jong-un, provided that the latter renounces nuclear weapons.
Prior to that, the US President held talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
“If he makes certain commitments, I would meet with him. If it is a commitment that this is about his nuclear arsenal and that this (meeting – ed.) is just a means to de-escalate what they are doing”, – Biden said, quoted by RIA Novosti.
In addition, he believes that Pyongyang should follow “de-escalation commitments” before “any meetings”. To this end, it is important to organize negotiations at a lower level.
“I will ensure that my team meets with their colleagues (in the DPRK) and let them know what our intentions are”, – the United States leader said.
The head of the White House also drew attention to the fact that he would not give Kim Jong-un an opportunity to use the meeting to legitimize himself.
“I won’t give him everything he wants international recognition”, – Biden added.
Prior to this, the politician noted that the nuclear programs of Iran and the DPRK could cause serious damage to the United States and the world as a whole. Biden is ready to counter the threats of Iran and the DPRK with “diplomacy and strong containment”.
North Korean President Kim Jong-un and Biden’s predecessor as President of the United States Donald Trump, despite the absence of official relations between the two powers, met three times. At all events, they proclaimed the friendliness of their personal ties. Nevertheless, Kim Jong-un in early 2021 called the United States “the main enemy” of North Korea.
