German authorities have previously repeatedly said they believe the pipeline should be completed
Michael Kretschmer, prime minister of the German state of Saxony, has welcomed the suspension of part of the US sanctions against the under-construction Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
“It’s a good thing. “Nord Stream 2″ is in Germany’s interests. The project must be completed quickly”, – Kretschmer wrote on Twitter.
The US is waiving sanctions against Nord Stream 2 AG, the operator, and its chief executive Matthias Warnig. At the same time, Washington said the US will continue to oppose the project in general.
German authorities have previously repeatedly said they believe Nord Stream 2 should be completed. Berlin sees the project as an economic one. At the same time, the Cabinet of Ministers has emphasized one political aspect – here they insist that after the launch of the pipeline the role of the transit zone should be retained by Ukraine. Germany is now giving up on coal and nuclear energy. The country needs more gas to make the transition to renewable energy painless for the industry.
