US intends to waive sanctions on Nord Stream 2 operator

The U.S. administration intends to waive sanctions against Nord Stream 2 AG, the operator of Nord Stream 2, and its executive director, Matthias Warnig

This was reported by Axios, citing two sources.

The Joe Biden administration will waive sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 operator and its director, it said.

“The decision shows that the Biden administration has no intention of spoiling relations with Germany over the pipeline, and the difficulties President Joe Biden faces in matching action and rhetoric with a tough approach to Russia. The US State Department will soon send a mandatory report to Congress with a list of companies involved in the construction of Nord Stream 2″ that are subject to sanctions”, –  the publication said.

According to the sources, the US Department of State will call for restrictions against several Russian vessels. In doing so, the State Department will state that Nord Stream 2 AG and Warnig “are involved in sanctioned activities”.

“However, the State Department will reject the sanctions, citing U.S. national interests” , – the portal wrote.
