Earlier, the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, proposed such an initiative and pointed to “gaps” in the German culture of remembrance
TASS reports that Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, said the Bundestag had refused to erect a monument in Berlin to Ukrainians killed during World War II.
“We Ukrainians are disappointed that the Bundestag has rejected our request to build a memorial in Berlin to commemorate the 8 million Ukrainian victims of the Nazis, although it was decided to have a special place to remember Polish war victims”, – the Ukrainian diplomat said on his Twitter account.
Earlier, Kiev’s representative had already pointed to “gaps” in the German culture of remembrance. In his opinion, this is expressed in particular by the fact that there is still no monument to the Ukrainian victims of the Nazis in Berlin. At the same time, last autumn, German parliamentarians approved by a majority vote an initiative to create a memorial in Berlin to the Poles who died during the war.
