The United States has confirmed there is no direct link to Russia by the hackers who attacked Colonial Pipeline. US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm told CNN today, May 13
“This did not happen to a state-owned enterprise”, – she recalled.
“We believe there was no direct link to Russia, except that this group of hackers originated from Eastern Europe or Russia”, – the secretary said.
However, she urged that “everyone needs to be as careful as possible”.
“This is happening regardless of whether an international group or an internal group is operating”, – Granholm concluded.
As reported by EADaily, the day before, 12 May, the US fuel pipeline Colonial Pipeline, which suffered a hacking attack, resumed operation. It will take several days to restore normal operation, the company specified.
Earlier, Ann Nyberger, deputy assistant to the US president for national security, noted at a briefing that the cyber attack, according to the US authorities, was carried out by a group of hackers calling themselves DarkSide, and not by any state. Earlier in Washington, there had been speculation that the hackers were allegedly based in Russia. As a result, a major pipeline carrying fuel from Texas to the east coast of the US was paralysed. Because of this, a state of emergency was declared in the state of Florida. Moscow has denied the unfounded accusations.
