Maduro intends to hold talks with opposition leader

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro expressed his willingness to negotiate with the leader of the opposition, Juan Guaido, through the mediation of the Norwegian government and the European Union

“Now Guaido wants to sit down with me to talk. I agree. With the help of the European Union, the Norwegian government and the International Contact Group, I am ready to meet with the whole opposition when they want and where they want”, –  Maduro said during a speech in Caracas.

According to the Venezuelan President, Washington has instructed Guaido to start negotiations with him. Earlier, it was reported that the opposition leader had proposed to start negotiations between political forces to get out of the crisis situation.

Guaido, whose appointment as speaker of parliament was annulled by the Supreme Court two days earlier, declared himself acting president of Venezuela in 2019. The United States recognised him as head of state. Maduro called what happened a coup attempt and broke off diplomatic relations with the US.
