China, Norway and Tunisia request UNSC meeting over Palestine and Israel

Agence France-Presse (AFP) reports that a number of countries have proposed an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council over the escalation between Palestine and Israel

AFP diplomatic sources told AFP that the proposed open meeting would be attended by the Israeli and Palestinian sides. According to the agency, the UNSC has already held two closed-door meetings online that focused on the escalating tensions between Palestine and Israel.

The situation on the border between Israel and the Palestinian Gaza Strip escalated sharply on Monday night. The escalation was triggered by events in East Jerusalem, where riots on the Temple Mount have continued unabated for days due to the dispersal of Palestinians who had gathered for prayers for the end of Ramadan.

As a result of the rocket attacks on Israeli population centres, 6 people were killed and more than 200 injured. Israel retaliated with strikes in the Gaza Strip, killing several militants and senior field commanders.
