Election marks split – Bloomberg predicts big fight over Britain’s future

Two of the United Kingdom’s most formidable politicians face off in a bitter confrontation

As reported by News Front, earlier elections were held in the UK, the results of which have already sharply divided the country, where separatist sentiments have been growing recently.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party was able to consolidate control in the north of England, a region previously dominated by Labour. In Scotland, meanwhile, the party seeking a referendum on autonomy has won a historic majority.

Boris Johnson went into this election in the shadow of high-profile accusations of incompetence in office. The political debate was dominated by sensational claims that he broke the rules when he made lavish renovations to his residence.

In Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon’s Nationalist party also faced problems just before the vote. But with the Scottish Nationalist Party only one mandate short of an outright majority, Sturgeon will argue that her party’s unprecedented dominance of the autonomy parliament, combined with a strong result from the pro-independence Greens, will give her the resource to confront London.

The confrontation is likely to define British politics for the next few years, Bloomberg wrote. Two of the kingdom’s most formidable politicians are facing off in this race, and the fight has already begun.

Sturgeon has already warned that Johnson will have to go to the Supreme Court to stop her from initiating a referendum.

“There is simply no democratic justification for Boris Johnson or anyone else seeking to block the right of the people of Scotland to choose their future”, –  Sturgeon said in her victory speech.

In response, Johnson called a pandemic-stricken summit of sorts, revealingly inviting Sturgeon to join the British delegation. The risk of refusing this offer is that Sturgeon will be seen as a politician rejecting the support of the central government at a time when reconstruction is far from over.

“I truly believe that the interests of people across the UK and in particular the people of Scotland are best served when we work together”, –  Johnson said. – “This is the UK team in action and I reaffirm that the UK Government must work with the Scottish Government in this spirit of cooperation.”
