For the second consecutive day in a row, more than 4,000 people have died of coronavirus infection in India
According to the Health Ministry, 4,092 people have become victims of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. This brings the total number of deaths to 242,362.
The number of new cases has risen by nearly 404,000, slightly less than the record high.
Many Indian states have now imposed strict restrictions to stop the spread of infection. Cinemas, restaurants and shopping centres are closed in the country. However, a nationwide quarantine is still pending, although a record 4,187 deaths were reported in India on Saturday.
The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation estimates that 1 million people could die from COVID-19 in India by August.
