A NATO summit will be held in Brussels on June 14 without Ukraine’s participation as a partner country
“This NATO summit on June 14 will be held without the participation of the alliance’s partner countries, which include Ukraine among others. This summit will be attended by member countries only. The most important thing for us is the content of the summit on June 14. Here we can be sure that the topic of Ukraine will definitely be discussed”, – the deputy head of the Ukrainian presidential office, Ihor Zhovkva, said.
He noted that “NATO’s closest partners, namely the USA, Canada, Germany, France and Poland, were assured of discussing the Ukrainian issue at the NATO summit”.
Decisions of the summit, including those on Ukraine, will be recorded in a common final document.
“Work on such a document is ongoing. We continue negotiations with our partners to ensure that Ukraine’s interests are taken into account in the Alliance’s final decision.”
According to Zhovkva, the alliance does sometimes fail to hold summits involving partner countries.
“For example, such were the summits in London in 2019 or Strasbourg and Kehl in 2009, which were held only with the participation of member countries. Therefore, the current summit of the Alliance after the election of a new president in the US could quite expectedly take place exactly in the ‘narrow circle’ of NATO member states.”
However, he did not rule out that “such a decision to hold a NATO summit only among members of the Alliance and without the presence of partner countries could be reconsidered”.
News Front earlier reported that Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanyshyn said that during her visit to Brussels on 17-18 May, she intended to discuss all important issues of Ukraine’s interaction with NATO.
