The meeting between the presidents of Russia and the United States will take place in conditions of historical tension in relations between the countries, and Joe Biden has no right to make the same mistake as his predecessor.
The American side offered to hold the summit after the US president called the Russian leader a “killer” and groundlessly accused Moscow of committing a cyberattack late last year. Despite this, Biden has expressed a desire to speak with Vladimir Putin to avoid further escalation of tensions. The Kremlin reacted positively to the White House idea, although it was recently forced to recall the Russian ambassador from the United States amid the West’s Russophobic policies.
In such conditions, it is difficult to predict the outcome of the summit, writes the American edition of The National Interest. Moreover, Biden should not overestimate his meeting with Putin, as Trump did.
“High-level diplomacy such as a summit has symbolic meaning”, – the article says.
“Attention should be paid to routine, productive communication between the governments of the two countries, as well as negotiations at the working level on controversial issues”.
Thus, the publication proposes to start a constructive dialogue with the normalization of the work of the diplomatic missions of the two countries. The achievements in issues related to arms reduction should not be dismissed as well. In doing so, special attention should be paid to the return to the Open Skies Treaty.
“Biden must actively reduce the possibility of a clash between the United States and Russia in a military confrontation. Part of this is the return of open skies, but also an end to the ongoing US military intervention in Syria, where Russia also has forces”, explains NI.
“It is equally important to prevent the deployment of Russian troops in Eastern Europe, especially in Ukraine, where Russia is currently reducing its troops. However, even if this reduction is reversed, US security interests will remain insufficient to justify the possibility of open war with Russia”.
