Experts answer objections of environmentalists over construction of Nord Stream-2

Nord Stream-2 does not pose a real threat to the marine fauna of the Baltic, Pavel Sigal, first vice president of Opora Rossii told RIA Novosti. Experts answered the environmentalists’ objections over the construction of Nord Stream-2.

“The objections of environmentalists, which were voiced earlier, have already been repeatedly refuted by official departments and the German government, and attempts to slow down the construction or freeze it are viewed as speculation. The pipeline does not pose a real threat to the Baltic marine fauna”, – Sigal emphasized.

The expert noted that such construction projects cannot be implemented without a special large-scale examination, which was previously carried out by the German authorities and international organizations.

In turn, the risk of stopping Nord Stream 2 due to the claim of the German Union for the Protection of Nature (NABU) was assessed by Leonid Khazanova, Candidate of Economic Sciences.

In his opinion, so far there is no serious threat to the project, since the environmentalists have applied to court quite recently, and it will take time to consider the claim. At the same time, stopping the construction of the gas pipeline is possible only on the basis of a court decision, which will not be taken quickly.

He also suggested that behind the back of NABU are groups interested in blocking the Russian project.

“I would not be surprised at all if NABU received financial support from the United States: Washington is trying with all its might to stop the construction of the gas pipeline and could well agree with environmentalists about such actions against it”.
