Dozens of citizens have been detained after thousands of French people joined traditional May Day demonstrations demanding social and economic justice and opposing government plans to revise unemployment benefits
Reuters reports that 34 people were detained on Saturday, May 1, in the French capital when trade unionists were joined by members of the yellow waistcoat movement that sparked a wave of anti-government protests across Europe three years ago.
The marchers, most of whom wore masks in line with quarantine rules, carried placards that read: “Dividends not unemployment benefits are the income of the lazy” and “We want to live, not survive”.
The police prefecture responded by bringing 5,000 enforcers onto the streets.
