Australian authorities have closed the border to anyone who has visited India in the last two weeks. Australian citizens could be fined up to $50,000 if they try to return home from India, The Hill reports
“This is a difficult decision by the government. But it is vital that the integrity of Australia’s public health system is protected and that the number of COVID-19 cases in quarantine facilities is reduced to an acceptable level”, – said Australian Health Minister Greg Hunt.
The government has imposed a temporary restriction on entry to the country for people who have been in India for the last 14 days. According to the Australian Health Minister, the restriction will take effect on May 3 and will be reviewed on May 15.
Earlier, it was learnt that India had recorded the maximum number of deaths due to the coronavirus in a day. It reached 3,689 in the past day. A total of 215,542 people in India have died from the coronavirus since the pandemic began.
