State Department tells why Ukraine is still not in NATO

The Kiev leadership must fully comply with the requirements and obligations for Ukraine to have a chance to join the North Atlantic Alliance

This statement was made by US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Philippe Ricker.

Speaking about Ukraine’s prospects for NATO membership, the US official used a long-standing wording according to which “the door to NATO remains open to applicants”. According to Ricoeur, the Joe Biden administration is doing everything for this. However, Ukraine, in its turn, must “meet the relevant requirements and commitments”.

In particular, the diplomat recalled that Kiev is already working through a year-long national programme that allows it to engage with the alliance.

“This is part of the necessary efforts to build a more stable, democratic, prosperous and free Ukraine”, –  the official stated.
