Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to play a mediating role in resolving acute problems arising between the CSTO member states, including between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, said the press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov.
“Of course, given our commonality in various formats – this is the CSTO and others, of course, President Putin is always ready to play a mediating role in resolving acute problems that may arise between the participating countries. He has already demonstrated this many times”, – Peskov said.
He also pointed out that the Kremlin welcomes the ceasefire agreement between the parties, hopes that it will be sustainable and will avoid similar situations in the future.
Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry also said that Moscow “is ready to assist in every possible way in resolving any controversial issues by political and diplomatic methods”.
The conflict on the border of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan began on April 28 over the section of the Golovnaya water distribution point located in the upper reaches of the Isfara River. An attempt by one of the parties to install video surveillance there led to an incident between citizens of the two countries, who threw stones at each other. Later, the situation escalated into a conflict with the participation of the military of the two countries and the use of firearms.
On the evening of April 29, the parties agreed on a ceasefire and the withdrawal of military units. The Foreign Ministers of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan also agreed to organize joint patrols at the border.
On Friday afternoon, Sputnik radio reported that Kyrgyzstan announced the final cessation of shooting on the border with Tajikistan.
