Russian command negotiates ceasefire in northeast Syria

Another ceasefire came to an end yesterday in the town of Kamyshly in northeastern Syria

According to tg-channel “Directorate 4”, the ceasefire was established before a meeting between representatives of Arab-Kurdish and government forces. As before, Russian servicemen acted as mediators.

“At that time, army aviation was seen in the air – Mi-8 and Mi-35 helicopters were providing security for the officers who arrived for the talks. However, no decision was taken at the meeting. A second round of talks is expected. At that time the truce will remain in effect”, –  the report said.

Tribal representatives were not left out either. Some of them voiced their support for the Arab-Kurdish forces. The elders called for maintaining control of the Kamyshly area, where government forces were stationed (the National Defence Forces lost most of the territory in the clashes).

“The pro-Damascus tribesmen have dutifully called on their neighbours to repent, start cooperating with the government and refuse US support”, –  the channel’s sources said.

This time Russian negotiators did manage to achieve a bit of success. Despite the uncertainty of future agreements, a ceasefire has been established and all parties have agreed to respect it. There has also been an exchange of bodies of those killed, mediated by the Russian Armed Forces.

“Discussions are now underway for the return of the townspeople who left their homes after the fighting began. However, Asayish said the ceasefire will continue until it is broken by the National Defence Forces. And this is another stress test for Russia in Syria – to be able to convince government forces not to give in to provocations and not to shoot in all directions”, –  the channel’s experts said.
