This once again confirms Russia’s consistency in respecting universal human values, said Armen Sargsyan.
Armenian President Armen Sarkissian on Thursday sent a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, thanking the Russian authorities and personally the leader of Russia for their contribution to the recognition of the Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire. This was reported by the press service of the presidential administration.
“Armenia highly appreciates the efforts of the Russian Federation, as well as your personal merits in recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide. Recognition of the Armenian Genocide, the declaration on the recognition of April 24 as the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Armenian Genocide, the statement of the State Duma on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, your participation in the ceremony, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, reaffirms Russia’s consistency in respecting universal human values”, – Sargsyan’s letter says.
On April 24, Armenia annually celebrates the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Armenian Genocide. On this day in 1915, the deportation of representatives of the Armenian intelligentsia from Constantinople began. The mass deportation and extermination of the Armenian population in the Ottoman Empire during the First World War is called the Armenian Genocide.
On April 24, 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin took part in Yerevan in mourning events on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Putin stressed that Russia’s position on the genocide remains unchanged: there is no and cannot be justification. He also recalled that Moscow has become a party to and initiator of such international normative acts as, in particular, the Convention on the Prevention of the Crime of Genocide.
