Three police officers were killed in a car bomb explosion at a checkpoint in the province of Herat in northwestern Afghanistan, Tolo News reported on Saturday, citing the country’s authorities.
The governor of the province, Sayed Wahid Katali, said the explosion took place in Zinda Jan district. After the explosion, the Taliban attacked the district from three directions, and clashes continued for several hours.
According to the governor, the Taliban also launched attacks on other parts of the province, during which, however, the Afghan security forces were not injured.
The governor added that one civilian was injured in a mine explosion in the city of Herat on Friday.
In Afghanistan, there is a confrontation between the government forces and the militants of the radical Taliban movement, which previously took possession of a significant territory in the rural areas of the country and launched an offensive against large cities. The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces are conducting joint counter-terrorism operations across the country. Peace talks kicked off between the Afghan government and the Taliban on September 12, 2020 in the Qatari capital Doha.
