Von der Leyen refuses to go to Ukraine, responding to Zelensky through a secretary

Zelensky wrote a letter to the head of the European Commission, in which he invited her to the celebration of the 30th Independence Day of Ukraine, and in response, he was refused on behalf of the head of the administration of Ursula von der Leyen – Björn Siebert.

According to Politico magazine, Zelensky wrote a letter to Von der Leyen, in which he invited him to the celebration of the 30th Independence Day of Ukraine, as well as to take part in the first meeting of the Crimean Platform. The latter aims to demonstrate support for “Ukrainian sovereignty” over the Russian peninsula.

“Siebert sent his signature reply to the Ukrainian president, which angered EU diplomats. In it, he declined the invitation and added that Von der Leyen was sorry. Although, according to the protocol, the letter had to be written on behalf of the President of the European Commission”, – the publication says. Refusal of such an invitation may raise doubts about Von der Leyen’s desire to demonstrate support for Ukraine at a time when Russia is pulling the largest number of troops to the Ukrainian border”.

A too busy schedule was indicated as the reason why the President of the European Commission cannot come to Kiev. And this also surprised diplomats and officials. Since the solemn events in Kiev will be held on August 23-24, when Brussels and all EU institutions will be closed for the summer holidays.
