Media: Protests erupt in Minnesota after police officer shoots African-American man

Protests began in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, after a police officer shot and killed a black man on Sunday. This was reported by the local Star Tribune newspaper.

 

According to it, the man in question is 20-year-old Dante Wright. City police officers stopped his car for a traffic violation. They discovered that an arrest warrant had previously been issued for the young man. For what exact reason, it is not specified. Wright did not comply with the demands of the law enforcers who tried to detain him and got back into his car.

One of the police officers shot and killed the young man. His vehicle drove several streets and crashed into another car. Wright was given medical attention, but died on the spot. There was also a woman in the car. She was hospitalised for her injuries. There is no threat to her life.

About 500 people gathered outside the city police headquarters in connection with the incident. They refused to disperse on police demand. Law enforcers used tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets.

In addition, about 200 people came to the place where Wright died. They damaged two police vehicles. There were clashes between protesters and law enforcers. Incidents of looting were recorded in the city. The governor of Minnesota and the mayor of Brooklyn Center said they were monitoring the situation.
