Two leaders of the conservative bloc CDU/CSU, part of the governing coalition in Germany, Armin Lachet and Markus Söder intend to fight for the post of German Chancellor during the elections to the Bundestag, reports Deutsche Welle
Christian Democratic Union (CDU) chairmen Armin Laschet and Christian Social Union (CSU) chairman Markus Söder have publicly declared their intention to fight for the post of German chancellor.
“We have established that both are suitable and both are ready to be the Conservative leaders in the election race”, – said Söder.
He also stressed that the conversation with Laschet was friendly and open, but was not of a final nature. According to leading representatives of the Conservative bloc, it will be known in the coming days who will be the candidate for chancellor.
Current German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has led the government for 15 years, has again refused to run for office. She first said she would not campaign for the next Bundestag election back in October 2018. The next Bundestag election is due to be held on 26 September 2021.
