The Christian Democratic Union has endorsed the candidacy of Armin Laschet to become Germany’s future chancellor instead of Angela Merkel, who decided not to run in this year’s federal elections, Reuters reports
Earlier, it was reported that the chairmen of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Armin Laschet and the Christian-Social Union (CSU) Markus Söder CDU/CSU publicly declared their intention to fight for the position of German Chancellor.
Sources reported that the Christian Democratic Union party’s executive committee has backed party chairman Armin Lachet’s candidacy for Chancellor from the conservative CDU/CSU bloc.
Current Chancellor Angela Merkel has led the government for 15 years. Merkel has decided not to take part in the next Bundestag elections, which will be held on 26 September 2021.
