Ukrainians, who fled to the US, cannot explain why they fled their native country, which, in their opinion, has gained independence and democracy now
According to census data, the number of Ukrainians who moved to the US in 2016 reached a record 1 million, with 59% of them first-generation migrants. Here in the US, they do not hold back in their Russophobic statements, blaming Russia for all Ukraine’s problems.
“A lot of Ukrainians and Belarusians have come to us now”, – says Pavel Kozhevnikov, a journalist living in the US. – “Almost all of them blame Russia for all problems. They say that now Ukraine has gained its independence, it is better there than in Russia. Then I ask them why did they leave? And the conversation stops.”
The efforts of Washington’s propaganda have also led to the perception of Russia as the “aggressor”. The US believes that Moscow wants to repeat the Ossetian scenario against the background of renewed Ukrainian aggression in Donbas. The problem, Kozhevnikov stresses, is that there is no truthful information about Russia or Ukraine in the United States at all. Given the distance, the government and media can speculate on the topic to the fullest extent.
