According to the so-called constitution of Kosovo, the president is elected by parliament. The candidate must be supported by 80 out of 120 deputies.
As the correspondent writes, the deputies of the parliament of the unrecognized republic of Kosovo, by a majority of votes in the third round of voting, elected ex-speaker Viosa Osmani as president.
“The deputies were offered two candidates from the ruling Self-Determination movement – ex-speaker of parliament Vyosu Osmani and Nasuf Beita. In the first two attempts to vote on Saturday, April 3, only 79 parliamentarians took part. The election was postponed until Sunday evening, the message says. In the third round, 61 votes were needed. Vyosu Osmani was supported by 71 deputies”.
Osmani has been acting president since November last year, when former President Hashim Thaci resigned. Thaci left office to stand trial in The Hague on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Thaci said that in this way he is taking a step “to protect the integrity of the presidency” in the country. Previously, Osmani was the speaker of parliament.
