Two Americans detained in the US for planning to join ISIS

They could face up to 40 years in prison in total

According to TASS, the U.S. authorities have detained two American citizens who were heading to the Middle East in order to join the ranks of the terrorist group Islamic State (IS, banned in Russia).

“American citizens James Bradley and his wife Arwa Muthana were detained on March 31 at a seaport in New Jersey on suspicion of attempting to join ISIS”, –  a statement on the website of the US Department of Justice, the country’s attorney general’s office, said, specifying that Bradley and Muthana had been under the control of US intelligence agencies for some time.

A statement from the agency stressed that the man had previously allegedly sworn allegiance to IS and expressed a desire to join the militant group. Authorities had information that the detainees were also planning to carry out an attack on US soil, including at the military academy in West Point, New York, or another military training facility. Bradley later learned, the document noted, that he was under the control of the authorities, so he and his wife attempted to travel to Yemen on a cargo ship, where they planned to join a terrorist organisation.

Bradley and Muthana appeared in court in New York on Thursday. They were charged with conspiracy to provide support to a terrorist group. In total, the detainees face up to 40 years in prison.
