According to experts at the US newspaper The Washington Post, the relationship between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and White House President Joe Biden depends on whether the Ukrainian leader is able to free the country from the dominance of oligarchs
“In the more than two months of the new US administration, Biden and Zelensky have still not spoken directly. And the issue is increasingly worrying for Ukrainian officials”, – the publication notes.
The Washington Post also stresses that Ukraine’s cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is highly questionable. Ukrainian officials have been unsuccessfully trying to convince IMF representatives that the country does have a serious fight against corruption.
However, according to the paper’s experts, Zelensky’s imaginary fight against the oligarchy in Ukraine has been reduced to a war with the chairman of the Opposition Platform – For Life party, Viktor Medvedchuk. Three opposition TV channels were blocked from broadcasting in February as part of sanctions against him.
“The power of the oligarchs in Ukraine is deeply entrenched in areas such as energy, mining and media, giving the billionaire group carte blanche in shaping political and strategic decisions”, – The Washington Post concluded.
