Russian diplomats expelled from Italy, sparking new spy scandal

Italian authorities have announced their intention to expel Russian diplomats allegedly involved in espionage

An information campaign has now been launched in the Italian media to discredit Russia, accusing it of espionage. In particular, it is alleged that a Russian detained by the security forces was gathering secret information about Italy and NATO.

“We have conveyed the Italian government’s strong protest to the Russian ambassador and informed him of the immediate expulsion from the country of the two Russian officials involved in this most serious case”, –  the Italian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday, 31 March.

The situation is similar to the recent scandal in Bulgaria, where Russian diplomats were also accused of espionage. Experts have linked such anti-Russian insinuations to attempts to discredit Russia, which is now actively distributing its vaccine against the coronavirus worldwide.
