Providers have proceeded to enforce a controversial decision of the local regulator that openly violates freedom of speech
As recently as last year, the National Electronic Media Council banned the rebroadcasting of seven Russia Today TV channels on the pretext of “violating EU economic sanctions”.
Today it has become known that Latvian providers have begun blocking access to the RT website.
Alexey Pushkov, member of Russia’s Federation Council :“The Baltic states are in the vanguard of destroying freedom of speech and the rights of journalists. They are violating both their obligations before the Council of Europe and the OSCE and the principles of the European Union. This allows us to speak of them as national-police states, but not as democracies. And disguises do not help here.”
