US to step up sanctions over Nord Stream-2

The United States conveyed its position on Nord Stream-2 to the Federal Republic of Germany and is determined to increase sanctions. This was announced by the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in an interview with CNN reporters.

“We believe that the construction of a gas pipeline is a bad idea, and it was important for us to be able to speak directly to our close partner – Germany. And this is what I did. The US Congress is of the same opinion. According to American law, we have imposed sanctions against companies that are involved in the construction and are trying to complete the pipeline. We made it clear that we will continue to build up sanctions”, – Blinken said.

According to him, the fact that the United States and Germany “have disagreements over this pipeline will not change” the strong relationship between the two allies.

“We just wanted to make sure that there is no ambiguity in our position and that our friends and partners understand us. And it is very unfortunate that the gas pipeline is in one way or another a source of disagreement. But despite these disagreements, this does not detract from the fact that in virtually all other areas we work more closely than ever before”, – said the head of the State Department.

The Secretary of State has once again called Nord Stream-2 a “bad deal, which allegedly “undermines European energy security”.
