Serbian police detain a migrant who broke off a cross on monument in the center of Belgrade

This is a monument to the founder of the Serbian state, Stefan Neman, by the Russian sculptor Alexander Rukavishnikov.

According to TASS, citing the press service of the Serbian Interior Ministry, it took Serbian law enforcement officers less than a day to detain a vandal who broke off a cross on a monument in the center of Belgrade. It turned out to be a 28-year-old migrant from Afghanistan.

“The incident took place on Saturday afternoon. The object of the vandal’s attack was a monument to the founder of the Serbian state, Stefan Neman, by the Russian sculptor Alexander Rukavishnikov, recently erected in one of the central squares of the city”, – the statement says.

According to Serbian media reports, a migrant from Afghanistan walked around the monument for a long time, then broke off a cross from it and, after passers-by rushed to him, fled the scene of the crime. The incident had a great public response in Serbia, where the traditions of Orthodoxy are strong.
