India ranks third in the world in terms of the number of detected cases of coronavirus. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, a total of 11.97 million cases of COVID-19 have been registered in the country. At the same time, more than 11.32 million people defeated the disease, about 486 thousand continue to be treated, 161 thousand people died from coronavirus and concomitant diseases.
The largest number of cases fell on the state of Maharashtra, where 35.7 thousand new cases of the disease were detected over the past day. Earlier, the state authorities imposed a night curfew amid an increase in coronavirus cases, all shopping centers in the state will be closed from 8:00 pm to 7:00 am, and gatherings of more than five people are prohibited at this time. For violation of this regulation, the police will impose a fine of 1 thousand rupees, the same amount will be a fine for spitting in public places. For appearing without a mask, a fine of 500 rupees is imposed.
Earlier, the First Deputy Minister of Health of India Rajesh Bhushan said that doctors sent by the government to the state of Maharashtra had discovered “the beginning of the second wave of COVID”, and the Ministry of Health of India announced the discovery of a new variant of the coronavirus with a double mutation in the state.
Following Maharashtra, the largest number of new cases was detected in Chhattisgarh (3162 cases), Karnataka (2886), Punjab (2805) and Gujarat (2276).
The Ministry of Health also noted that over the past day, 312 deaths associated with COVID-19 were registered in India.
