U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has said that disagreements over Russia’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline will not affect cooperation between the United States and Germany
“First and foremost it is important that Germany is one of our closest allies and partners anywhere in the world. We work together every day on many issues that have a profound impact on the lives of our citizens, and we work as close partners. The fact that we have a disagreement over Nord Stream 2, and it is real, does not and will not affect the partnership and the relationship as a whole”, – Blinken told Euronews.
However, he noted that US President Joe Biden’s administration considers the project a “bad deal for Europe” that “undermines core EU principles of energy security and energy independence”.
The US authorities actively oppose the Nord Stream 2 project and have made numerous attempts to block construction of the pipeline. In this way, Washington is trying to strike a blow to Moscow’s goals and support Ukraine, through which Russian gas transits to Europe.
“Nord Stream 2” envisages the construction of two gas pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic metres of gas per year from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany.
