Bundestag urged to raise the issue of confidence in the government of Merkel

The leader of the parliamentary faction “Left” Dietmar Bartsch called on Chancellor Angela Merkel to raise the issue of confidence in the Bundestag because of the scandal with the cancellation of the Easter lockdown.

“We are now in a real crisis of confidence in the country’s political leadership”, – he said in an interview with Funke, quoted by dpa.

“It should raise the issue of trust in the German Bundestag”, – he urged the chancellor. He noted that a consistent fight against the pandemic is possible only with a chancellor enjoying the confidence of the majority in parliament.

Bartsch declared about “dilettantism in the Chancellor’s office”.

On Monday, the German authorities introduced extended Easter holidays, instead of the holiday weekend on April 2, 4 and 5 (Good Friday and Easter), citizens could have a rest from April 1 to 5, while on April 1 and 3 even supermarkets were to remain closed, and citizens were prohibited there would be meetings with more than 5 people. According to the authorities, these extended holidays should “break” the third wave of the pandemic in the country.

This decision drew sharp criticism from opposition parties. Some called for a debate, some noted that the policy of restrictive measures needs to be reviewed, as well as the decision-making process on restrictive measures – on Monday negotiations dragged on until late at night and most citizens learned the news about the Easter break in the morning. Now such decisions are made by Merkel and the heads of the regions, holding periodic meetings. Then the decisions made are implemented in practice by the authorities of the federal states.
